How the Future Looks From High School: Your Take on Someone Else's Plans
Learning Target: You will write an argumentative letter with a claim, counterclaim, and evidence.
Task:
Visit NY Times Room for Debate.
Project:
Write a 3-paragraph letter to the student.
Include claim, counterclaim, and evidence.
Cite all evidence.
Follow formal letter writing style.
DUE: Monday, March 2.

Task:
Visit NY Times Room for Debate.
- Browse articles written by high school students.
- Select one article that either matches or closely matches your future plans, or one that intrigues you.
- Print the article (you will need to include it in your project).
- Read the article.
- Write a summary of the article (who, what, where, when, why, how)
- Decide whether you agree or disagree with the high school student's plans for the future.
- Create a claim (agree or disagree with the student).
- Create a counterclaim (why there is a reason someone would disagree with you).
- Cite 2-3 reasons why you agree or disagree with the student.
- Evidence can be personal experience, an interview with an expert, or information you obtain through research. CITE EACH SOURCE YOU USE. According to the article xxxxxx on yyyycccm.com, etc.
- CITE EACH TIME YOU DIRECTLY QUOTE OR PARAPHRASE INFO.
Project:

Flash Fiction Project Due Tuesday Feb. 3
Publishing instructions:
All final drafts should be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font, and printed.
Please organize your work this way, and staple or clip it when you turn it in. Make sure that your name is on the final draft and all other papers you turn in.
Top: Final Draft
Middle: Drafts from most recent to least recent - please number them., organizers/outlines, peer comments, plot map, free writes, brainstorm.
Bottom: Rubric and Self-Assessment/Reflection (completed)
Late shares via Google Drive will lose 5 points for each day late.
Late self-assessments and reflections will lose 5 points for each day late.
This will be your first major grade of Term 2. Please adhere to deadlines and follow task guidelines. Refer to your notes about flash fiction and use what you learned in class and through the writing process to produce your work.
EXTRA CREDIT ALERT: Students who wish to read their stories to the class with receive extra credit. Readings will begin on Tuesday Feb. 3. Students will also be silently reading and commenting on one another's work during a gallery walk. Looking forward to reading and hearing some amazing flash fiction stories!

- Please print the final draft of your flash fiction story, plus include all handwritten or typed elements of the writing process (see "middle" above) and turn in at the start of period 3 ELA on Tuesday Feb. 3. This will be graded as a project.
- You must also share the final document with Mrs. Marks at shari.marks@wjps.org. Please allow me to "comment" on your document. This will be graded as homework.
- In addition, please print the SCORING RUBRIC and complete the self-assessment and reflection sections according to the directions. You must be signed into your WJPS email to access and print this document. This is also due at the start of period 3 ELA on Tuesday, Feb. 3. This will be graded as class work.
